7 Ways to Come Up With Creative Blog Post Titles

by Anna McHenry August 3, 2012

Coming up with a creative blog post title will either break or make your blog. While there are many other factors to making sure the search engines see your blog and that it gets the attention it should, you need to have an attractive post title so that people will want to click on it. If you can’t think of an attractive blog post title, then chances are your content is more than likely going to lack a factor that people like to read. People like to read something that’s interesting and fresh. Perhaps you might need to work on your writing skills or communicating with your audience if you’re having trouble thinking of a creative title.

#1 – Be odd.

Like Lady GaGa and Nicki Minaj, they’re very odd and they have their own style of doing things. However, does it work for them and does it get attention? You can bet that it does. They’re some of the most popular stars and it works because they’re odd. So when you’re making or thinking up a post title, don’t be afraid to be out there and a little odd.

#2 – Interaction

How does your post interact with your customers or visitors? A post title should have something that pops out at potential visitors and something that will interact with them on a deep level. They obviously found your blog because they have an interest.

#3 – List

Perhaps you could include a top 10 list because people love to click on top 10 lists. I find myself clicking on far more top 5s and top 10 list posts than any other kinds of posts. So perhaps you should think of re-writing your post or your title at least to something that will incorporate some kind of list.

#4 – People Love Guides

Guides usually hold your hand through something and teach you how to do something. Without sounding as mean as possible, people are generally lazy and don’t like to figure things out on their own. So if you have a guide on something that can teach people how to do something, you’ll far more clicks than a generic title.

#5 – Juicy

Use juicy and interesting words rather than just general titles. So, if you’re selling a product on removing rust, this would be a good example of what I’m talking about.

Bad Title: This is how you remove rust from something
Good Title: Rust sucks, if Rust were a person, this is how we’d do bodily harm to them!

So remember when writing your titles, you want something that sounds interesting to people with the use of different words. Words that pop out at people and again don’t afraid to be different.

#6 – Longer Titles

Long tail titles work far better than short titles. “Making Money Online” is an example of a very terrible blog post title that will not get many clicks. “How Anyone Can Make Money Online” on a dime budget will get far more clicks because it’s longer and it’s more interesting. So try to avoid writing short titles that will appear boring and more than likely not be clicked.

#7 – Attention Grabbing Keywords

Use keywords inside of your blog post title. Not only is this good Search Engine Optimization because most blogging software uses H1 tags automatically as the title but this looks far more appealing than a basic and plain title. Titles that use keywords will connect better with users because it’s appealing.

Writing a blog post title is so much more than just trying to sum up what the article is about but it’s so much more about utilizing those 7 tips listed above to maximize your conversions and visitors.
